Workplace Deviance Workplace deviance is a voluntary unethical behavior that disobeys organizational norms about wrong and right, and in doing so, threatens the wellbeing of the organization, and/or its members(Robinson and Bennett 555-572). According to Robinson and Bennett, â€Å"workplace deviances behavior varies along two dimensions: minor versus serious, and interpersonal (deviant behavior directed at other individuals in the organization) versus organizational (deviant behavior directed at the organization)† (555-572). Based on these dimensions it was further divided, into four categories: production deviance (leaving early, wasting resources etc.), property deviance (stealing ,destroying equipment etc.), political deviance (gossiping,†¦show more content†¦Hallet describes workplace gossip as a form of â€Å"reputational warfare†(3). Article also expands on how workplace gossip can be handled before it dilutes a person’s ability to manage effectively, poisons workpl ace congeniality and contributes to employee turnover. Hallet discusses this through an observation he conducted of meetings of an elementary school teachers’. His observation revealed that meetings designed to discuss students turned into teachers gossiping about colleagues, especially about the school’s new principal. This eventually lead to persons undermining the authority of the school’s principal.Hallet believes if gossip was handled better the principal would have been more successful and there would have been less turnover. Lastly, he mentioned gossip should handle before it gets out of control and starts to define who you are (Smerd 3). Lastly, falsely blaming co-workers is another form of political deviance. Falsely blaming co-workers is the accusing colleagues of unethical, incorrect and /or improper behavior or activity. This usually leads to breakdown of organizational communication, creates stress,decrease morale and poor performance.
